On August 31, 2026, the European Commission added Roblox to the list it uses for the largest online platforms under the Digital Services Act. YouTube and Instagram are already on that list. The same notice also named Reddit as a large platform and ChatGPT as a large search service. The trigger was size. The Commission wrote that these services "declared that they reach at least 45 million average monthly users in the EU and thus meet the threshold for designation."

Roblox's own page for that law puts the number at 46.6 million average monthly users for the six months ending August 13, 2026. The company says the figure is only for this reporting rule and does not match how it counts daily players. The Commission's public list records 46.6 million and notes that a company-reported count can still be checked.

The listing starts a clock. After the notice, Roblox has four months, by January 2027, to meet extra duties that apply to the biggest platforms. Those duties include looking at risks from the service and the systems that sort what people see, covering illegal content, effects on children, and users' physical and mental well-being. The notice does not say Roblox broke the law. The full decision file is not posted yet.

That clock is what reaches a living room. For a parent, the ordinary change is simpler than the legal name. A place where kids already play is now treated, in EU law, as a big public square. The August 31 listing does not prove the game became more dangerous. It also does not promise that every household will feel a difference by January. Some EU platform rules already applied. The extra duties are EU law. A family outside the EU does not automatically gain new legal rights from this notice.

Find the controls this week

While that clock runs, Roblox already publishes parental controls. A parent who links an account can manage screen time, content settings, spending limits, privacy, and who can chat with a child. Those tools were there before August 31.

The useful question is whether you can find them without hunting. Open the child's account, or the parent account linked to it, and look for three things: who is allowed to chat, what content setting is on, and where you report a problem. If that takes more than a few minutes, that is the finding. Use the news as a reminder to look now. Do not wait for January to do a job the settings page already offers.
